I think you...You did crack it, but what an odyssee! I think you would have had less trouble with one of the many patterns that prefer NOT to be in a grid but are squeezed into one and labelled 'tangle'. Your centrepiece is certainly not one of them and you have been really heroic about it. In my experience, bales is one of the easiest patterns to distort, with knightsbridge following close on, and anything with lots of lines and a complicated step-out plan should be avoided (I avoid them all the time!). One tip I can offer is to load a pattern into a photo programme and use the distorting function to pull it around and see what happens to it.
